Brighten up to your computer desktop

This blog entry was posted on: 05 August 2010.

If you have been using boring, plain computer wallpaper backgrounds, it could be time for a change. Many freebies exist to liven up your desktop and in this post we’ll highlight a few of our favourites.

One thing you can do immediately is grab a brand new background image. We particularly recommend the Free Hubble Space Telescope Desktop Wallpapers from HubbleSite, where you will find some of the most impressive imagery ever taken with a camera (or telescope!). On a similar theme, the free Space and Nebula wallpapers round-up from Smashing Magazine offers more space-themed photos.

But if you’re more into scenery or nature, try the Free National Geographic wallpapers. They have a large and high quality collection all ready for the taking. Simply select the images you wish to download and then follow the simple instructions.

Something different to try is Desktop Earth, a free software download displaying “an accurate representation of the Earth as it would be seen from space at that precise moment”. Using this tool you can see areas of the Earth in darkness and also those in the light. Of course, you can see areas of population and large cities lighting up. We highly recommend this!
