As the saying goes, “they don’t make ‘em like they used to”. Some classic games have been released free of charge so you can relive ‘the good old days’, when gaming was about the game-play – and not so much the flashy graphics. Of course, some excellent games have been released in recent years that combine excellent graphics and game-play. But there’s just something about classic games that modern technology struggles to recreate.
Fans of strategy will be pleased to hear the original ‘Command & Conquer’, ‘Red Alert’ and ‘Tiberian Sun’ games have been released free of charge. They are some of the most enjoyable wartime strategies ever created (as many who have played the games will testify). Red Alert is particularly impressive. To download, visit the Command & Conquer Classics page and then scroll down to select a game.
Remember GTA (Grand Theft Auto)? Here you can download the first two instalments, which spawned a loyal following of the GTA series which continues to this today. Downloading a copy is easy. Just complete the short registration and they will e-mail you a link where the file can be downloaded.
If you’re more of a first-person shooter gamer, you will have likely heard of QUAKE, a popular fantasy game launched in 1996. QUAKE allowed players to compete against each other across a network and the Internet at large. As such, it’s popularity was truly astounding. The game is now free to play online at QUAKE Live, and you can select from over fifty arenas and five game modes. Please note: this site is currently in beta so it’s still a work in progress.
