Free Milk Jugs for Sainsbury’s Customers

This blog entry was posted on: 11 May 2010.

As part of Sainsbury’s campaign to reduce product packaging by a third by 2015, the supermarket is offering free JUGIT containers on Saturday 15th May in 500 of its stores up and down the UK.

The containers are used in conjunction with Sainsbury’s ‘milk bags’, which contain 75% less packaging than traditional 2-pint plastic bottles. Add the milk bags to your JUGIT and you’ve got an effective, reusable and ‘greener’ way to pour your milk.

It is claimed only 1 in 4 plastic milk bottles are recycled in the UK (the amount of 2000 Olympic-sized swimming pools!). Despite the 9.3 million milk pints consumed every year, the majority of packaging ends up at landfill.

Sainsbury’s senior dairy buyer, Emma Metcalf-King, said:

“When we first launched milk bags in store, we gave one to every colleague to try. Their feedback was so positive that we wanted to do something to encourage our customers to give it a whirl too. Milk bags are a great way for us to help the environment and when you can pick one up in store for free, they’re a great way to help the family budget too.”
