Free Television on the Web

This blog entry was posted on: 03 March 2010.

Ever since broadband was rolled out to the masses, video has flourished on the Web. However, it has not always enjoyed such popularity. In the earlier days of the Internet, video was a luxury few users could experience. It is only recently that we have seen some real headway.

Sites such as YouTube have been pivotal to this movement by revolutionising the way we access information. If you have a high speed connection, you no longer need struggle with slow, jittery viewing. In fact, video has become so commonplace that television can be accessed online, and at your convenience.

Many popular TV channels provide on-demand access to Web television, so if you miss your favourite programme, there’s no need to fret. You can catch up at the time and place it suits you. The BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Five have all jumped on the bandwagon with their own variant of “on demand” television, but these aren’t the only channels available.

Accompanying this is a selection of “free to broadcast” channels. BBC One, BBC Two, ITV, Dave, Film 4, Sky News, Virgin 1 and QVC comprise just some of these channels, which are readily accessible on the Web and free to view.

Free services such as TVCatchup and Zattoo will help you view the programmes you want. Download Zattoo and you’ll gain access to a variety of TV stations, including some of the lesser-known ones: The Poker Channel, EuroNews, Information TV, plus the major ‘free’ channels. TVCatchup is a Web-based service that’s also accessible on the iPhone, so you can now watch TV on the move!
