Free vs commercial software

This blog entry was posted on: 13 January 2010.

Many individuals and organisations appear to be turning to free software as an alternative to commercial packages. It’s hardly surprising really, considering how costly some programs are!

Freeware (that is, free software with no catches or evaluation period), is fast becoming a viable alternative to commercially available software and comes without the added burden of a hefty price tag. Free licensing is especially useful for charities, schools and other companies wishing to save money on their expenses. When budgets are tight, using freeware can be a smart move. Consider this: Despite the enormous amount of free software available, many people still insist on purchasing software. In many cases freeware is as good as, if not better than, commercial applications. Read Free security software ‘as good as commercial brands’ from The Times newspaper. In addition, since freeware has no price tag or restrictions, anybody can make savings of up to £1000 and higher!

However, some organisations still appear to be paying over the odds for software. Microsoft Office, another software suite that’s far from affordable, can be replaced with the impressive (and free) OpenOffice.org. Some other useful free software that we recommend include:

AVG – Free protection from viruses.
