Google Mail in the UK is now Gmail

This blog entry was posted on: 09 May 2010.

Are you the owner of a Google Mail account in the UK? We thought you might like to know Google is now changing its name to Gmail. If you registered before 2005, you may already have a @gmail.com address. Subsequent legal proceedings resulted in the UK variant becoming “Google Mail”. However, as of 3rd May 2010, users with @googlemail.com addresses now have an option to change it back to good old @gmail.com!

Gmail is one of the Internet’s largest free e-mail providers, ranking alongside services such as Hotmail and Yahoo Mail!. It was originally “invitation only” but was soon rolled out to the masses.

Google estimate this change will save approximately 60 million keystrokes a day, given that gmail.com has 50% less characters than @googlemail.com.

There is no pressure to modify your address and even if you do, e-mails still being sent to your @googlemail.com account will automatically forward to your @gmail.com one. In fact, it will be the same account. You can make the switch very easily indeed: simply access the “Accounts” tab in your Gmail settings.
