Here at freebielist.com we see all kinds of free software downloads and this superb program called Prey is among the most impressive. As the introduction says on their Web site, “Prey lets you keep track of your phone or laptop at all times” - even in the unfortunate event it becomes lost or stolen.
In a nutshell, this open-source software functions as follows: you download and install Prey to your computer or mobile device. The program then embeds itself into the system covertly - so users are unaware of its existence. After a quick registration, an online control panel can be accessed, which tracks the geographic location right down to street level. It’s scarily accurate!
In the unfortunate event your device becomes lost or stolen, it’s easy to begin gathering data. Simply log-in to the control panel from anywhere with an Internet connection, then mark the computer as “missing”. Prey will then begin finding a location using GPS and nearby wireless hotspots. It can also secretly take a Web cam photograph of the person using the device. In addition, you can lock-out the user entirely, view any modified files, schedule regular screenshot uploads, and compile a complete hardware profile. You can also remove stored passwords and hide e-mail messages from prying eyes.
The software works incredibly well but if you require even more features, a commercial upgrade is available (suitable for enterprise use). Functions on the following platforms: Windows, Apple, Linux and Android.
