Findmypast 14 Day Trial

Tracing your family tree has been made a whole lot easier since the invention of the Internet. With so many records available online, you can do the vast majority of work from the comfort of your home. Obtain a free 14 day trial of Findmypast.

Rather than visiting libraries and other archives, sites like Findmypast let you search vast data banks of information for details connected to your family. The site enables you to perform searches of births, marriages, and deaths, plus military, education and travel/migration documents. Land, surveys, census and parish records are also available, as are newspapers and periodicals. Findmypast claims to contain the “UK’s largest collection of parish records, dating from 1538”, plus over 24 million passenger list records.

You can either perform a search of all records simultaneously or select to pinpoint the exact archive to search. If you’re new to searching family records, there’s an excellent “getting started” guide, plus a number of detailed articles covering topics such as starting your family tree, to topics covering the various types of records available (parish, census, newspaper, etc.).

The site is very easy to navigate, which allows you to concentrate on finding facts, unlike some similar sites that can be difficult to navigate. Records from Australia, Canada, United States and New Zealand are also included and are excellent for tracing roots overseas. The site has a great “My Account” area that lets you manage all aspects of your family history, plus subscriptions should you decide to continue using the service after the 14 day trial has elapsed.

Two subscription options are available: 12 months (usually cheaper over the course of a year), or 1 month (otherwise known as a “pay as you go” package), which involves a slightly higher cost. You can also select to access World records at an addition fee.
