TwitBacks - Users of the popular social networking site Twitter can spruce up their profile free of charge with TwitBacks. The site allows you to create a background within two minutes, and you can select from a number of existing backgrounds or create your own from scratch (using an uploaded image and custom fonts).
Free Twitter Designer - Do you use the popular social networking site, Twitter? If you would like to update your page with a snazzy new background, check out this site: freetwitterdesigner.com. Even if you have no experience with image editing, this site will assist you in creating a good-looking and professional background within minutes.
Free Mini Pixel Icons - This site features over 1000 free mini pixel icons, perfect for Web-based projects, or to add a bit of extra spice to user-interfaces and content management systems. Various icon sizes are featured: 14x14px , 12x12px and 16x16px. Computer icons, flags, symbols and others are also featured.
BackgroundLabs.com - A bright and colourful site, offering a range of free backgrounds and textures, ideal for publication or Web page design (or even for MySpace and Twitter backgrounds). They include various categories, including: abstract, animated, clouds and sky, floral, holidays, nature, retro, etc. You can also search via colour or tag.
A Clipart History - If you've ever tried to locate free clipart images for a history-related project, you'll know how difficult it can be. Thankfully, this site specialises in high-quality public-domain clipart on all aspects of history (all the way from prehistoric to modern). A wide selection of people, places, buildings, transportation and other artefacts are available.
Free Photo Textures - A high quality site offering a variety of royalty free stock photo textures and backgrounds. Categories include: brick, concrete, dirt/sand, fabric/carpet, glass, paint, paper, plaster, rust, stone, title, wood, and more. The author asks if you find any of the textures useful, add a quick link from your Web site or blog page.
Pixlr - A quality, free and easy-to-use online photo editing service. Pixlr can handle the majority of basic tasks directly from a Web browser, so you needn't download software to edit images. Users can adjust, filter, crop and perform many other tasks in a familiar (albeit online) Photoshop-esque environment. This service is particularly useful for editing images ready to be used on the Web. A variety of interface languages are available. Note: the site is in "beta" but we encountered no major problems during testing.
Zamzar - This largely unique service allows users to convert various file types online, without the need to download any special software. If you need to convert image, video, audio, document or other files (i.e. JPG to PNG or WMV to MP3), this site can handle it. The maximum file size on their free version is 100MB, which includes 5 concurrent conversions. Note: this site loads a small pop-up window (to enable the owners to pay for such a solid - and free - conversion service). You can remove the ads for a small monthly fee.
Free Icons Download - This site offers a wide and quality selection of royalty free icon images, suitable for use on your desktop, Web site or other publication. Icons are separated into various categories, including Art, Applications, Business, Cartoons, Holiday, Sport, System, Web icons, etc. They also offer free icons in multiple file formats: .ico, .gif, .png and .bmp.

If you're looking for something specific and can't locate it here, e-mail requests are welcomed, and they'll go out of their way to find the image you're after.
