Free Scripts
Welcome to our free scripts category. In this section we feature providers of free CGI scripts, JavaScripts and also other code. If you happen to stumble across an outdated link, we'd very much appreciate it if you could report it. Thanks for visiting and enjoy your time freebie hunting!
TheCgiSite.com - A directory-style resource that links and reviews everything related with programming. Here, there are hundreds of free/commercial scripts to download in various popular languages, ranging from Perl and JavaScript to ASP and C++. With easy navigation and great content, it certainly lives up to its motto, "The mother of all programming sites".
CGI 2 You - This is one of our favourite free CGI Web sites. It's well-designed, easy to navigate and serves up some extremely useful scripts. At CGI2You.com, a free counter, voters poll, message board and guestbook are all provided free of charge, and they're hosted remotely, too. So you needn't have any knowledge of programming or scripting. Just register, then add the code.
CGIScript-Directory.com - Here's a great directory of categorised links to scripts written in Perl, PHP, ASP, Java, JavaScript and various other languages. There are some commercial scripts featured here, but the vast majority of them are completely free, so you needn't pay. As well as scripts you install yourself, "remotely hosted" script services are also reviewed here.
FreeJavaChat.com - Offers free chat rooms to add to your Web site. FreeJavaChat.com is able to provide a 100% free service with no banner adverts or other annoying gimmicks. You can use mIRC or the Java chat applet in any Web browser, plus users can take advantage of private messaging, IRC commands, a simple mode, etc. This service also includes various other features.
Matt's Script Archive - Matt's Script Archive is without a doubt one of the most popular CGI resource/download sites on the Internet. Matt has a fine collection of useful scripts, including: "simple search" (allows users to search for pages on your domain), form mail (sends the contents of a form to your e-mail address), free for all links (start your own FFA links page), and many more.
The CGI Resource Index - Arguably the most visited site for free (and commercial) script resources. This "FreebieList.com favourite" features a searchable directory of free Perl scripts, C++ scripts, links to remotely hosted CGI, documentations, books and even a job advertisement section. Users can rate each script on a scale from 1-5 and leave brief messages for other visitors to read.
HTML Goodies - A popular and excellent resource for the new HTML author. HTML Goodies (an Internet.com site) provides everything you need to get started with HTML and provides realistic answers to questions that a person new to the language might ask. Tips are available and they advise you on which books are best to buy, including their own book called "HTML Goodies" (surprisingly enough).
HotScripts.com - The "Web Development Powerhouse" is much more than a directory of CGI scripts. It contains links and reviews to every popular type of programming language, such as Perl, Java, JavaScript, C and C++, PHP, Python, ASP, XML and many others. We've found the site a breeze to browse through, and there's plenty scripts here to see (over 10,000 in over 900 categories).
ScriptSearch.com - Internet.com's ScriptSearch is an excellent portal-style resource for everything CGI and programming related. Their main categories include ASP code, Perl, Java and XML, which are organised into a neat, searchable directory. The Web site is updated regularly (usually every day) and their newest additions are highlighted at the top of the page with a "new' image.
The Java Boutique - This cool site from Internet.com provides Java applets, servlets and applications plus a unique variety of tutorials, reviews and articles. You can search for a particular script by the date it was created, the name of the script or even by the type of function it performs. At this site, you'll also find a busy discussion forum, a Web poll and Frequently Asked Questions.
Focus on JavaScript - About.com's "Focus on JavaScript" provides a great mixture of scripts and tutorials, all of which are ideal for beginners or advanced "power" users. Their script library includes various pieces of code, such as rollover scripts, image scripts, navigation scripts, time-stamps and many more. If you want to try other languages, you'll also find lots of links to DHTML resources.
Scrolling Text Applet - As a special promotion, Sirius Computer Consultants have decided to give away one of their Web page components absolutely free of charge. Using the "Scrolling Text Applet" you can provide an animated look to your pages. The Java applet will automatically size itself to the available area and can be customised using various colours, styles, borders, backgrounds, etc.
JavaScript.com - JavaScript.com is one of our favourite sites for finding free, in-depth tutorials and scripts. Although the site has a great design, it is rather cluttered with links to other resources so it pays to thoroughly "scan" the homepage for links, before you dive into an area, then lose your track. Despite the usability issues, there is lots of useful information here for advanced Webmasters.
